My name is Peter Gerlach and I’m 75 years young.
I have lived here in Gangelt since 1981. My daughter grew up here, and my granddaughter was not only raised here but born here too. I have deep roots in the municipality of Gangelt.
I worked as a craftsman for more than 50 years and have now been retired for 11. My free time has allowed me to devote myself fully to the hobby I took up through my membership of the St. Josef Schützenbruderschaft Hastenrath, the local marksmen’s brotherhood: sport shooting.
Over the years I have held many posts in the St. Josef brotherhood; most recently I was range master and responsible for the shooting range in Hastenrath. Today I am district range master for the deanery of Gangelt/Selfkant, looking after teams from 21 villages in Gangelt and the Selfkant.
I’m not a member of any party, but I’m standing for the municipal council for Bündnis 90/Die Grünen because, overall, their political programme is the closest to my own views.
I believe it is important to preserve our lovely municipality, so strongly shaped by the countryside around it, for our children and grandchildren – and perhaps even to improve it here and there.
That’s why I have relied for many years on solar thermal, solar panels, a heat pump and an electric car. And these green technologies put more money in my pocket, too, because for much of the year – at least from spring to autumn – I’m independent of the big energy companies. The electricity I use, including to charge my car, comes from my balcony solar system.
Around Hastenrath, many farm tracks have deteriorated so badly in recent years that they are hardly fit for walking any more, and often you can’t ride a bike on them either. The same goes for other tracks in our area. I want to see them restored to the condition they were in many years ago, so that the many wayside crosses, chapels and, of course, the neighbouring villages can once again be reached safely.
A lot of slurry is transported into our municipality. I want to make sure that these transports don’t harm our natural environment.
