My name is Lena Honings, I’m 40, married, the mother of two daughters, and I have lived in Gangelt with my family for many years – a place that has truly become my chosen home. I grew up in the Selfkant.
Professionally, I’m a certified marketing specialist. Perhaps you’ve already seen a poster I designed or read a text I wrote without even knowing it :).
Why I’m standing?
I want women to be better represented in our local politics. I have been involved with Bündnis 90/Die Grünen for several years because there I feel seen, heard and understood. The party stands for my convictions: a world worth living in for everyone, social justice and treating one another with respect. A saying my grandmother often quoted still guides me today: “Do as you would be done by.” For me, that means: no place for racism, hostility towards queer people or the exploitation of our natural resources – and instead equality and respect for all people, without exception. What matters to me: “It takes a village to raise a child.” That saying sums up perfectly what I wish for our society: working with each other, not against each other. Learning from one another and supporting each other. Treating one another with respect regardless of age, origin or social status – and treating nature with respect too, because we are part of it. I want a society in which volunteering, family and work are not mutually exclusive. Being active in clubs, schools or the neighbourhood comes naturally to me – even though I now know how hard it often is to manage alongside work and family. For that, we need new values and genuine equality.
About me:
I’m a food saver, a lay judge at Aachen District Court, a long-standing member of the St. Hubertus Gangelt music society, and for several years I was active on the Gangelt neighbourhood advisory council. I enjoy reading non-fiction, trying new things and I love moments full of laughter, ideally with my family and friends. I want to listen, offer fresh ideas and open up new perspectives – and I can be a strong voice for the quieter people in our society. I’m convinced: creating the right conditions and taking responsibility is a task we all have to take on.
