Meet Sylvia Kist-Rawert – Ward Stahe-Niederbusch-Hohenbusch

My name is Sylvia Kist-Rawert and I work in the field service of a public authority. I’m currently 51, married and the mother of a grown-up daughter.

In my private life I’m a creative person: I paint and write stories. I love spending time with family and friends and sharing ideas with them.

Through my work I meet many people from the most varied backgrounds, so I know how different people’s realities can be. If we want to grow together as a society, the only way is through exchange, dialogue and mutual understanding.

I have always based my vote on a party’s programme. I have always found a great deal in common with Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, so I have almost always voted for them – above all because we share the same understanding of society and of democracy.

In 2020, in response to parts of society shifting to the right, I decided to support the party by becoming a member. At the time, I couldn’t imagine going into politics myself.

Last December, Friedrich Merz set out to push through tougher migration laws with the votes of the AfD – a party that has been under surveillance by Germany’s domestic intelligence service for years. For me, that crossed a line I could not accept.

That’s why I’m now standing for a seat on the municipal council. I want to work with all democratic forces to find solutions that work for our municipality. Because we all live here together.

I share a long history with the municipality of Gangelt. When I came to Niederbusch at the age of seven, I had already had bad experiences in a city. Here I was able to heal. At 15 I moved to Hastenrath with my parents and spent my teenage years here, my life as a young woman and later as a mother. My daughter was born and raised here.

Twice I had to leave Gangelt – once because my father-in-law was seriously ill, and once for work. But I never lost touch with the place – my parents still live in Hastenrath.

Now I’m home again and live in Birgden.

As you can see, what drives me is society itself. How do we want to treat one another? Do we want to value each other or stir up hatred? For me there is only one answer. Our municipality should be a place where everyone feels at home and is accepted just as they are. A place they value, that gives them a home and a sense of security – especially in uncertain times.

Yours, Sylvia
